Volleyball Rules
These rules are adjusted or clarified from time to time as  needed.

1) All official volleyball rules will be followed with the additional modifications/clarifications indicated below.

2) Every week each team will rotate play, for a total of four games. Each team will also ref once or twice. For example:

Court II

4 VS 5

1 and 2

3) Teams may have up to six people on the court at any time, but are restricted to a limit of four men or four women on the court at the same time.

4) Teams rotate after every sideout in a clockwise motion with a new person rotating in at the serving position and the left hitter position. All players must be in the rotation unless doing so would violate rule 3.

5) A game is official as long as 3 people show up and at least 1 player is female.

a) During the regular season, a team that has less than 6 people show up can ask anyone in their division to join them for the game or until enough of their regular team shows up to make 6 people. Referees may not act as substitutes.
b) During the playoffs, only people on your team roster can play on your team .

6) All games will be played to 21 points, 25 time permitting.

7) Rally scoring will be used in all games. Rally scoring means that every score or side-out is a point.

8) All games will be subject to a 15 minute duration. If time runs out before a game is completed the team in the lead shall be declared the winner, if the scored is tied then play shall continue for one more point. One 30 second time out per team per game is allowed only if the team requesting a time out is behind in the score and more than 3 minutes remain on the clock. Time-outs may not be called during play - which begins once the referee authorizes the serve.

9) Carrying, nets, and foot falls will be called. There are no openhanded underhand hits allowed. There will be no spiking by palming the ball.

10) Serves can be returned using two hands overhead to pass/set the ball. Blocking or spiking the serve is not permitted.

11) Breaking the plane of the net is prohibited with the following exceptions.

    a) On offense, when spiking the ball: The Spiker may break the plane of the net as long as the Spiker comes into contact with the ball at or before the plane of the net. The Spiker may not break the plane of the net in order to make first contact but may break the plane of the net on their follow through.

    b) On Defense, when blocking the ball: The Blocker may break the plane of the net in order to block provided the blocker does not interfere with the opponents play.

12) Blocked hits (not serves) that fail (the ball still gets over to the side that attempted to block) do not count towards a team's three hit total but do count as a touch if the ball goes out of bounds.

13) Serves hitting the net and bouncing over to the other side of the net are good and have to be played.

14) Balls that hit the ceiling remain in play as long as they remain on the side that hit the ball. Balls that hit the back wall, side wall, and basketball backboards are considered to be out of bounds. (we may adjust the backboard rule if appropriate depending on the court)

15) Kicking and heading the volleyball are legal plays, so if this happens the ball is still in play.

16) Division A Only: The serving team will rotate to a new server after 5 successful consecutive serves.

17) The server may serve from anywhere behind the back line.

18) This is a self-refereeing league. Idle teams shall supply line judges, scorekeepers, and net referees as needed.

19) All decisions by referees are final.
